Books Here and There

I really love books - that's why I'm here. Sometimes I write reviews, though they are not always that good.

I also have a great love for animals and have a rabbit, two dogs, a cat and two rats at the moment.

Intertwined (Intertwined Series #1)

Intertwined - Gena Showalter I feel that this book would have been more enjoyable to me if the different supernatural elements weren't added in such a random way. The premises was good but it just wasn't for me.

Modelland

Modelland - It really bothered me how Tookie was referred to as ugly throughout the book. It was never ending and repetitive. It came from the used bookstore and there it will return.
Pretty Dead - Francesca Lia Block I really felt like this book was written to be more confusing than necessary. In the end some things remained unexplained. I imagine I would have liked it better if the author had explained the main character's transformation a bit better.
The Consumer - Michael Gira I will probably never read this because of the price ($200 or a new one on amazon and $60 for a used I could read dozens of books for that much!) but it looks very interesting. Maybe it will go on sale in 2030 or so? Even so I am amazed that a non educational book could cost so much! It must be very good.

How to Date an Alien: My Alien Romance: 1

How to Date an Alien - Magan Vernon Although it was definetly not my favorite, I enjoyed reading How to Date an Alien. I probably would have enjoyed it more if not for the stiffness of many of the relationships. It also seemed a bit weird how quickliy Ace latched onto Alex. He saw her and just knew he had to protect her even though he had never protected anyone before? That doesn't actually happen in real life so it made it harder for me to enjoy the book.
The Starlight Prophecy - Linden Morningstar For starters I'd like to say thank you to the first reads program for providing me with a free copy of this book. But unfortunately I also have to say that I didn't really enjoy it. The main characters's personalities seemed forced and I didn't connect with any of them very well. They also seemed a bit too capable to handle the challenges they faced so that they weren't really challenges. I really wanted to like this book but it just fell a little short to me.
Sweet Venom - Tera Lynn Childs This book was okay but nothing special if you ask me and I didn't particularly like Grace or Greer. Gretchen was pretty cool though despite being prone to judging people so fast. The book didn't really seem to have a proper ending either, none of their problems were truly solved.
Cinderella is Evil - Jamie Campbell It was an interesting idea to write from Cinderella's stepsister's perspective. But since all the stepsister in question seemed to be capable of doing was whining about how ugly she was and how Cinderella was a spoiled brat, it got old fast. I don't really appreciate it how her part of the family that was complaining about something like money and their ugliness. As much as I hated Cinderella I can easily understand why she would feel less then happy with her step-family.
Deadly Designs - Dale Mayer Although I originally gave this book three stars, I felt that I had to change it because I didn't really like it that much. It bothered me majorly how similar Storey and Eric's speech was even though he was supposedly more uptight because of the customs in his dimension. Neither of the two of them talked like most teenagers would instead they were both majorly uptight and spoke like they were just meeting instead of being boyfriend and girlfriend. The repeated use of "his/her gaze widened" also drove me a bit crazy. Not to mention the fact that Storey always seems to get pushed or pulled out of portals at inconvenient times in the two books in the series I've read so far. I wish there was a bit of a noticeable difference in ways things go badly for her

The Testing

The Testing - Joelle Charbonneau I received The Testing in exchange for an honest review.I wasn't entirely sure of what to think when I picked up The Testing. Now that I've finished reading it I further wonder how people can possibly enjoy The Hunger Games so much when books like this are out there. Cia Vale, the main character of The Testing, was amazing. Not many authors seem to be capable of creating such likable characters who aren't heavily conceited or shallow and boy crazy. I always find it a relief to find a book where the romantic interest doesn't save the heroine at every turn. It makes books that could have been amazing dull when that kind of thing is always happening. Tomas was also a likable character despite his questionable actions involving Zandri and her demise I really appreciated how he didn't protect or rely on Cia too much. That kind of behavior has often made me drop a book like it was on fire in the past.I can't wait for Independent Study to come out! I just can't!!!!!
Incarnate - Jodi Meadows I really felt connected with Ana and I really felt sorry for what she was going through (although I can't say I have much experience on reincarnation). I know most teenagers worry about their futures and who they are. But it really seemed hard for Ana seeing as she was the only teenager in the entire world.  I'm surprised she didn't crack and back talk Li all the time or even smack her around a few times! I really hope that I will be able to find more books similar in nature to Incarnate as I've never really read about reincarnation before...(except one really really poorly organized book with no real point)

Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo you are amazing! I loved Alina, I love Mal, I loved the plot, I loved the ideas, even the Darkling was amazing! So let's just be honest...I LOVED THIS BOOK! I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT IT! Wait there is one thing, I don't have the second one and that is going to make me cry. I can't wait to read it!!!
The Inner City - Karen Heuler I received a copy of The Inner City from the author in exchange for an honest review.I really truly enjoyed the series of short stories in The Inner City. I enjoyed the strange and rather creepy elements that were incorporated into each of the stories, even some of the more docile ones like "Fish Wish" that weren't as scary as some of the others left a lasting impression on me. My favorites among the stories were probably as follows, "Down On the Farm", "The Escape Artist", "Creating Cow", "How Lightly He Stepped in the Air", and "Thick Water". The sense of wonder I was left with is something I sometimes have trouble finding when reading although its a part of it that I really enjoy. Being left with questions after you read is something that helps it seem like the characters are real and breathing out there somewhere instead of taking up space on paper. Karen Heuler has made her characters come to life and I highly recommend The Inner City to those who don't cringe at strange and peculiar happenings.

Turned (Book #1 In The Vampire Journals)

Turned (Book #1 In The Vampire Journals) - No. Just no. You have to really put effort into making something as horrible as this. This "book" can go die!

The Color Purple

The Color Purple - Alice Walker The Color Purple really made me think. At times I felt so connected to Cecile that I thought I would cry, her story was so heartbreaking. I would definitely recommend this book, especially to those who enjoy a good emotional roller coaster.
Beginnings - Logan Byrne The idea was a good one but the execution didn't work. it reminds me of Twilight in so many ways and reads like a 3rd grader wrote it! I couldn't even get halfway through it. I would not recommend reading this with anything more than low expectations.
